2017 Toulouse and SW France (and Barcelona)
May 28-June 13, 2017
Now and then Doubloon Tours ventures a bit farther from home in search of the roots of our unique culture.
In late May 2017 we set off for Barcelona, capital of Catalonia and most cosmopolitan city in Spain. From its commanding perch along the northeast coast of the Iberian Peninsula, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, Barcelona has enjoyed a rich history. Today, the city is dotted with monuments, artifacts and architectural gems that speak to us of its Roman origins, its long period of prosperity and influence as a mercantile hub and regional power in the high Middle Ages, and its more recent glory as the capital of Catalan modernisme. We stayed in the heart of the Old City but also visited modern Barcelona, enjoying the many pleasures of a culture that has one foot firmly in Spain and one that has alway been reaching out to its European neighbors.
After taking in the sights and delights of Barcelona for 5 days, we crossed over into France and based ourselves for 10 days in Toulouse, fourth largest city in France and capital of the newly-defined (in Jan. 2016) French region of Occitanie, a consolidation of the former regions of Midi-Pyrénées and Languedoc-Rousillon. Situated along the banks of the Garonne River and less than 100 miles from the Mediterannean, Toulouse is one of the celebrated "pink cities" of the southwest of France, due to the local brick that has long been used for bulding. We discovered its rich heritage as a Roman province as well as a medieval urban center and prominent stop along the pilgrimage road.
From our base in Toulouse we set out to explore the beauty and the culture that surrounds, from the vineyards of Gaillac and Cahors to the wonders of Albi, the domain of Armagnac, the home of musketeer D'Artagnan, the panoramic views from lofty Cordes-sur-Ciel, the 12th- and 13th-century Cathar strongholds around Carcassonne, the serene beauty of the Canal du Midi, and so much more.
